Company ethos impresses new PM
A new member of staff, who started out as a fabricator welder is now a project manager with AJE said it was company’s ethos and progression that attracted him to the role.
Tommy Skelding who lives in the west coast of Scotland joined the firm at the start of May.
His career began with BHC, a structural steel firm based in South Lanarkshire and over the years, he has also worked as a foreman in the defence sector and also while working for New Zealand Oil at Marsden Point oil refinery in New Zealand.
He combined his engineering qualifications by attending night school for two years where he achieved an SVQ in senior construction management.
Latterly, he was working for another E&M giant OCS group, and it was here he learned about the role with AJE.
“I was approached by someone who had seen my CV and they said I had all the skills and qualifications that AJE was looking for. I did a bit of research, and I realised that AJE is the powerhouse of the Highlands and I really liked the way that the company was founded and has grown. I was really impressed and it also appealed to me that it doesn’t just do structural steel. It felt like it would be a company where I could learn and progress.”
Tommy who is married and has a five year old son, was introduced to Chris Roberts and visited the Forres HQ as he explained:
“It was Chris I met first and from then, when he spoke to me about the company, I knew I really wanted the job. I came up to meet Graham and the team and was shown round the Greshop and Waterford. That has never happened in any other company I have worked for. It was great to see. Graham and Chris outlined what the company is doing and the growth structure. They really know what they are talking about and the way the company is going aligns with my own principles.”
Tommy who has a passion for Roman history and likes rugby, football and going to the gym, added: “It’s important for me to be able to develop my career and it feels like AJE will support this. There’s opportunity and support for individuals within the company and I really like that.”
