Roof raise project success

A project which involved a complex roof raise is now complete with the next phase of the project starting imminently.

In May, we reported how AJE had secured more work as part of a £67m upgrade to GlaxoSmithKline’s Montrose site.

And although it has been a complicated project, the team are on track to meet the client’s delivery date with the plant installation into the building below being completed.

Project manager, Mark Armstrong explained: “This project has been more than just raising the roof to accommodate the plant’s new kit, it’s also been the fabrication and installation of a complex steel platform built over three levels below, to support and give access around the new plant being installed.

“AJE has also cut out and strengthened areas of the first floor below, which was a joint exercise between ourselves and the client’s site team who we worked alongside during the propping of the existing floor.”

Once the internal platform was completed, the new kit was lifted through the opening we created in the roof by the client. The team has also installed the platform’s handrail and flooring metalwork which itself was no easy task due to access restrictions into the building.

Mark added: “The last two weeks of the project were critical as to give access to the new kit which was lifted through the roof and into the building, the AJE team had to open the building up with the removal of the existing roof. It was our job to minimise the amount of time the roof was open to the elements and thankfully the weather played ball and it all went very well.”

The site at Montrose currently manufactures what’s known as active pharmaceutical ingredients, which are the bulk ingredients that compromise a variety of different GSK medicines, in areas such as HIV and respiratory.
